Robert Michael Smith

Robert Michael Smith, a resident of Chalfont, PA died Friday, March 9, 2018 at Doylestown Hospital. He was 79.

"Mike" Smith was born 12/21/38 in Hanover, PA to W. Cyril Smith and Sarah Emmert Smith. He graduated from Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown, PA and Shippensburg University.

He served in the Army for 2 years as an English teacher and then married his beloved wife Dee Ann Smith on August 10, 1971, which they lovingly celebrated in the backyard of their first and only home. He was an exceptionally devoted and unconditionally loving father to son Marc Smith (Michy Kelly), daughter Allison Smith Brand (Ben), grandfather to Sagan Kelly-Smith and devil-cat Snickers and numerous grand-dogs.

Mike worked as a history teacher first at Lenape Junior High. He later transferred to Unami Middle School in its inaugural year and worked there until he retired in 1997. In addition to teaching history, he also served as Unami's athletic director and the Doylestown Athletic Association young girls' basketball coach.

Mike was also a longtime football coach with Unami, which he even continued into retirement. He was the winningest junior high football coach in Bux-Mont league history, and Unami's gymnasium was named after him upon his retirement.

He authored two books, one an instructional manual on football coaching and the other a fictional telling of the story of the 104 ^th PA Volunteer Regiment. During his retirement, he volunteered as a docent for the Civil War Library and Museum in Doylestown and the Doylestown Cemetery. For his devotion to Civil War History he was awarded an honor from the Gettysburg National Park. In his "free time", he earned a black belt in Aikido, regularly donated blood, enjoyed running around Lake Galena, helped any person in need, and was an avid Eagles fan who was overjoyed to have lived to see them win the Superbowl.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate his Funeral Mass, 11 AM, Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at St. Jude's Church, 321 West Butler Ave., Chalfont, PA where the greeting will begin at 10 AM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Civil War Library and Museum at 32 N. Broad Street, Doylestown, PA 18901.
