Raymond C Sweeney, Jr passed away on March 28 th 2024 at the age of 85
He was the beloved husband of Dolly Sweeney (nee Knowles) for 59 years. He was the
son of the late Raymond C Sweeney Sr and Amelia (nee Finsel) Sweeney.
Ray was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Edward, and his grandson, Jack. He
is survived by his children Raymond Sweeney (Joan), Margy Conley (Glen), Mike
Sweeney (Jackie), Jeannine Duffy (Pete), and Amy Schemm (Pete) and 10
grandchildren, Megan, Sean, Emma, Hannah, Fiona, Owen, Brady, Mimi, Maura, and
Andy.
Ray was born in Philadelphia, and graduated from North Catholic High School and Saint
Joseph’s University. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from
Villanova University. Ray was a mathematician and a pioneer in the computer industry.
He worked at Philco, General Electric, General Atronics, Ford Motor company, and The
Philadelphia Board of Education - often referred to as ‘the board’- before his long career
as a math & computer science professor at Community College of Philadelphia, Saint
Joseph’s University, and Montgomery County Community College. For a short time, he
started a computer business out of his home - and 40 years later the converted garage
is still referred to as ‘the computer room’. Later in life, he shared his skills with the
community as a kind and patient math tutor, helping many better understand calculus.
During his youth, Ray spent summers with his family at Wilson Lake in Clayton, NJ. He
was a lifeguard and enjoyed fishing, playing soccer and everything about the lake. Later
he shared his rock skipping, fishing and canoeing skills during family and neighborhood
camping trips to Maine and Keen Lake.
Ray loved his family. Other loves included his dogs, the Phillies, being out on any lake,
technology, photography, music, sports, and math. He was a long time St Joe’s
basketball season ticket holder and always filled out an NCAA tournament bracket.
Sports were a big part of his identity. He coached Cenbucco soccer, and Lenape Valley
soccer, baseball, and basketball for many years. He was an advocate for girls sports in
the community before there was any organized program. A source of great pride was
that he started a girls soccer league, fostering a love of sports in a group of girls who
went on to become college athletes and coaches themselves.
Ray loved being involved with anything his grandchildren were doing and could
frequently be found taking pictures at their sporting events, music recitals, dance
recitals, school plays, and other school events.
