Maria Gioia Russo, age 89, of New Britain, PA, died peacefully in her home on Friday, July 28, 2023. She was born on April 22, 1934 in Luzzi, Italy to Teresa Amoroso and Antonio Gioia. Growing up in Italy, she had to quit school after 5th grade to help her Father cultivate the grounds they owned. At age 18, she married Girolamo “Gino” Russo and shortly after made her way to America and built a life together in Doylestown, PA.



Maria worked hard her whole life. Her greatest accomplishment was working for Delaware Valley University (College at the time), as a baker for 35 years. She absolutely loved it. Everyone knew who she was and loved her chocolate chip cookies and cakes. She loved having company and you never left her house with an empty stomach. Her favorite thing to say was, “Come and see me so we can have a cup of coffee at my house”. Her door was always open. In addition to baking, she also enjoyed cooking Italian meals for her family and trips to the casino.



Maria is survived by her daughters, Lynn, Gina and Yvonne, six grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister Angelina Altomare. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gino and her two brothers, Frank and Mario.




Funeral Mass will take place at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 235 East State Street, Doylestown, PA on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at 10:30AM. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9:30AM-10:30AM. Her interment will follow at St. John Neumann cemetery in Chalfont, PA.
