Joseph F. Murphy,86, passed away peacefully on February 27th with his heart filled with the
love of his devoted family and friends.
Joe was the loving husband of Catherine (Coleman) for 63 amazing years and father to 3
loving children, Mary Frances Mazza (Matt), Theresa Anne Fasano (Matt) and Joseph
(Colleen). He was the adoring “Pop Joe” to 9 wonderful grandchildren Matthew (Michael),
Emily (Bob), Caitlin (Jason), Philip (Geena), Kellie Murphy Fasano, Gregory, Allison (Matt),
Alex (Alexis) and Carolina and “G-Pop” to 2 “very active” great-grandsons Wesley and
Chase. Joe is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Joe was the devoted son of the late Michael J. and Anna T. (Durkin) and is survived by his
sister Patricia (Donahoe). Joe was predeceased by his 3 sisters Margaret (Graham),
Cecelia (Kennedy) and Joyce Murphy.
Joe grew up in St. Callistus Parish in the Overbrook section of West Philadelphia and was a
graduate of St. Thomas More (STM) Catholic High School for boys (class of 1954). He
graduated from LaSalle College Night School in 1964 and went onto have a very successful.
and influential 40+ year career in the banking industry.
Joe remained a faithful alum of St. Thomas More, where he helped organize and attend
many alumni events such as the annual Communion Breakfast. To the day he passed he
spoke often of the life-long friendships he had with his classmates. Joe followed the STM
motto by living his life with Pride, Integrity, and Loyalty.
He was a devoted Philly Sports fan and avid golfer. He had the time of his life when he
played a round of Golf at the historic “St. Andrews Old Course” in Scotland and fulfilled any
golfer’s life-long dream when he scored a hole-in-one at Talamore Country Club.
Joe honorably served his country as a member of the US Army and was a longtime member
of Ambler Rotary Club.
Joe enjoyed celebrating life to the fullest and creating lasting memories on the beaches with
his family in Ocean City New Jersey. After retirement he and Catherine loved travelling
together and especially enjoyed their trips to Ireland, Alaska, the National Parks, and Key
West (their favorite)!
Relatives and Friends are invited to a visitation on Friday March 3 rd at St. Helena’s Church
(1489 Dekalb Pike, Blue Bell, PA 19422) from 9:30-10:30 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will
follow at 10:30 AM. A private interment is planned.
In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St Thomas More Alumni Association
(STMAA) Scholarship Fund. Checks may be sent to STMAA, PO Box 294, Drexel Hill, PA
19026.
