Jane Claire Dougherty (née Rafferty), 86, a one-of-a-kind angel on earth, passed away on Saturday, April 26, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in South Philadelphia to Jane and Jack Rafferty, Jane was a proud Philadelphian through and through. She is survived by her son Dennis Dougherty IV (Maureen), her daughter Loreto Halton (Ed), and her cherished grandchildren Dennis Dougherty V, M Dougherty, Edena Halton, and Andrew Halton (Sharon). She is also survived by her beloved brother Jack Rafferty, her sister Kathleen Smolenak (Ralph), many loving nieces and nephews, and all the kids who knew and adored her as “Grammy Jane.” Her extended family and countless friends were blessed by her boundless love and light.
A devout Catholic, Jane watched daily Mass—sometimes two or three times a day. She was a proud graduate of Hallahan Girls’ High School, where she served as Alumni President and was a dedicated member of the board for many years. She also attended La Salle University.
Jane built a career in accounting at Drexel University, Mosers Inc., Lynwood Gardens, and the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Human Services.
A talented trumpet player, she first performed at Hallahan and later with the Donath Anita Orchestra. She passed on her musical gift to her grandchildren and local children, giving trumpet lessons with joy and patience.
Jane lived a life of deep community involvement and was honored many times for her contributions. She received the Governor’s Award for her work forming a successful town watch program and was awarded the Humanitarian Award from the Chapel of Four Chaplains.
A patron of the arts and avid reader, Jane had a sharp mind and lively spirit all her life. She shared her love for theater, concerts, and sports—especially the Philadelphia Phillies—with her children. She was the proud "Queen Bee" of her Red Hats of the Valley group, and a tireless organizer of bus trips, parties, alumni events, Bunco group, and book clubs.
Jane never forgot a birthday, anniversary, or special moment in the lives of those she loved. She prayed daily for everyone and made each person feel truly seen and cherished. Her smile, quick wit, and extraordinary generosity left a lasting impression on all who knew her. Jane made the world a better place simply by being in it. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered—always.
