James Elwood Johnson born November 28, 1922 went to his home in heaven on May 21, 2017 to be rejoined with his beloved wife and granddaughter.
Born on the family farm in Pennington, Jim was the son of James B and Lillie (Pfeiffer) Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mardella J. Johnson and his granddaughter Julia E. Johnson. He is survived by his brother, Robert (Sophie) Johnson, sister Ruth Wister, son James R. Johnson (Kathleen), brothers in law John B. Fisher (Fran), Allen H. Fisher (Helen) and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was a 1941 graduate of Pennington Central High School. After graduation he worked at Ajax Electrothermic Corporation then went into the US Army Air Corps, 8 th division from 1943-1945. Upon his return home he was a manager at the Farmers' Cooperative Association of New Jersey 1946 until 1975 when he became manager of Farmers' Brokerage and Supply, retiring in 1987.
Jim aka Elwood was a member of New Jersey Agricultural Society, the Princeton Agriculture Society, Lawrenceville Grange, Mercer County Pomona Grange, ,New Jersey State Grange, National Grange, New Jersey Farm Bureau, Howell Living History Farm, NJ Soybean Industry Advisory Council, Pleasant Valley Vigilant Association, Hopewell Valley Regional Board of Education, Hopewell Township Republican Committee. He was a trustee for the New Jersey Museum of Agriculture and Harbourton Cemetery Association.
Jim received the Mercer County Board of Agriculture's Distinguished Service to NJ Agriculture Award, the State Grange Award for 45 years on the Executive Committee, the Arthur West Award for Service to the NJ Farm Bureau, the NJ State Board of Agriculture Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award, and the 2014 Gold Medallion Award from the NJ Agricultural Society.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, July 8, 11:00 am at Pennington United Methodist Church, 60 South Main Street, Pennington, NJ. Following the service family and friends are invited to greet one another at the luncheon in the church.
