George E. Wittmaier, Jr.

George E. Wittmaier, Jr., formerly a Funeral Director in Chalfont, passed away March 1, 2017, after a long illness. He was 80.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of Barbara (Frey)Wittmaier, a professional runway model and George E. Wittmaier, Sr., a Funeral Director in Philadelphia. George is survived by his children Tracie DiPasquale (Pete) of Florida and Karl G. Wittmaier of Chalfont. Karl continues the family name with his painting business, Wittmaier Custom Painting. He was predeceased by his first wife the late Marilyn (Weeks) Wittmaier who passed away in 1970.

George attended Temple University, graduating with an Associate's Degree in Mortuary Science. As a young man, he worked on a fishing boat in Wildwood and as a pit crew for local race tracks including Watkins Glen and Maple Grove.

After mortuary college, George served his apprenticeship at Levine Funeral Home in Philadelphia and then as a Funeral Director working with his father. He moved to Chalfont in 1958 and there established the Wittmaier Funeral Home in 1963. During this time, he also worked at Hartzell's lumberyard in Chalfont.

George was the mayor of Chalfont from 1970 to 1973 and a member of the Chalfont Republican Club, Chalfont Fire Company and was the former President of the Chalfont Lions Club.

George had a wealth of knowledge about classic and antique cars, restoring many over the years and they were often used in local parades and weddings. He attended and was a judge at various car shows and won First National Place for his 1957 Bentley Silver Cloud restoration.

For 31 years the Wittmaier Funeral Home served the community of Chalfont. George was extremely proud of the dignified and professional service he was able to provide. George retired in 1994 and sold the business to Jim Scanlin who continues George's same tradition of excellence today as Scanlin Funeral Home.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend his Funeral Service 11 AM, Monday, March 6, 2017 at Scanlin Funeral Home, 175 East Butler Ave., Chalfont, PA where the visitation will begin at 10 AM. Interment will follow at North Cedar Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia. In lieu of flowers, donations in George's memory may be made to Association of Frontal Temporal Dementia at www.theaftd.org .
