Edward P. Hurst

Edward Hurst, 91, was surrounded by family when he passed peacefully on Thursday, October 5th. Ed was born in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, the second oldest of ten children for Nora (Brady) and Patrick Hurst. He was preceded in death by both his parents, his second mother Eleanor “Cookie”; wife, Carol; and siblings Henry, Dorothy, Mary, John “Jack”, Thomas, Patrick and Bernard. He is survived by his brother Robert (Kathleen) and sister Catherine “Katie” Mayer. Ed was a loving father to his children Carol and Patrick (Tara) and a devoted Pop-Pop to his grandchildren Erin, Briar and Shane. He will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews and their children who looked to him for love and guidance throughout their lives.

Ed was a longtime member of the Philadelphia Roofers Union, Local 30. He often spoke fondly of his time roofing and loved pointing out which buildings he had worked on while driving with his children around the area. After years as a foreman and shop steward, Ed was appointed a business agent for Local 30 and eventually was elected President of Local 30. He loved doing his part to ensure that his union brothers and sisters had the opportunity for good jobs with family sustaining wages and benefits. Much of his retirement was spent enjoying the serenity of the Jersey shore in the Villas.

Family and friends are welcome to celebrate Ed’s life at a Funeral Service on Wednesday, October 11th at 11:00 am at the Scanlin McDonald Funeral Home, 175 East Butler Avenue, Chalfont, PA 18914. Ed’s viewing will be at the funeral home Tuesday evening, October 10th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and Wednesday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 am prior to the service. Interment Private.
