Domenico (“Dominic”) Mazzeo, 85, passed away unexpectedly on September 2, 2022 at his
home in Chalfont, PA.
Dominic was born on April 17, 1937, in Caria, a small town in the Calabria Region of southern
Italy. The oldest of four children, Dominic started working at a young age to support his mother
and siblings while his father was away in Argentina earning a living for the family from there.
At the age of 19, with the assistance of his uncle and aunt, Dominic was able to immigrate to
Ambler, PA. After working several jobs, his people skills led him into bartending and restaurant
work.
In 1964, he returned to Italy for a visit. He met his future wife, Domenica, on April 17th, which
happened to be both their birthdays, although they were born in different years. After marrying
later that year, they moved to Ambler where they started their family. At this time, their tradition
of having a family spaghetti meal on Sundays started and continues to this day with their
children and grandchildren. For this and other reasons, Dominic’s favorite day of the week has
always been Sunday.
Dominic eventually worked his way up to become a manager with a large food service company.
Then, in 1977, Dominic and Domenica opened their own restaurant, Mazzeo’s Deli, in Colmar,
PA. The next year, the family moved to nearby Hatfield, PA where Dominic and Domenica had
their fourth child.
Over the next 33 years, the business flourished, and Dominic and Domenica fulfilled their dream
of having their children attain the type of education Dominic and Domenica never had the
opportunity to get for themselves. By the time Dominic and his wife retired, they were living in
Chalfont, PA and Dominic had become Nonno to nine grandchildren.
In his retirement, Dominic was a committed Nonno, taking every opportunity to attend his
grandchildren’s school, sports and other extracurricular activities. When not spending time with
his grandchildren, Dominic kept himself as busy as ever maintaining his property, being the
family handyman, raising chickens and making wine. Dominic and Domenica also maintained a
daily routine of working out at the gym and attending morning mass.
Dominic is survived by his loving wife, Domenica, with whom he recently celebrated 58 years of
marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Frank Mazzeo (Patricia), Peter
Mazzeo (Elaine), Rosaria Embert (Chris) and Maria Rose Mazzeo. He is also survived by nine
grandchildren: Domenico Mazzeo, Michaela Mazzeo, Isabella Mazzeo, Alexa Mazzeo, Angela
Mazzeo, Rose Mazzeo, Monica Embert, Olivia Embert and James Embert. Dominic is also
survived by his brother, Dr. Michele Mazzeo (Maria Lisa), and his sister, Marianna Romeo
(Tony). He was preceded in death by his parents, Francesco and Rosaria (Costa) Mazzeo, and
his sister Sandrina Costa (Tony).
A viewing will be held at Scanlin-McDonald Funeral Home, 175 E. Butler Ave., Chalfont, PA,
