Barbara Lee (Jones) Wherry of Chalfont, PA, passed to Eternal Life on December 6, 2017. She was 83 and died peacefully in her sleep due to complications from late onset Alzheimerʼs Disease.
Born Dec. 31, 1933 in Columbus, OH, she was the daughter of the late Urshel and Beatrice (Gardner) Jones, and from the age of eight, was raised in East Detroit, Michigan. She majored in primary education, received her BA in 1957 from the Ohio State University, and became an elementary school teacher after graduation. At OSU she met her husband to be, Dr. Robert J. Wherry, Jr. whom she married on Nov. 30, 1957. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
She was the beloved mother of Robert James, III (Helene) of Hudson, NH, Stephen Paul (Gina) of Lansdale, PA, the late Richard Kent, Mary-Beth Peddell (Michael) of Fleet, England, and Barbara Lee Skog (Mark) of Springfield, VA and cherished grandmother of Sarah Herrmann, Nick Mosquera, Grace and Faith Wherry; Marisa and Jason Wherry; Sophie and Giorgia Peddell; and Emma and Alex Skog. She is also survived by her sister Mary Janice Carr of Brighton, MI and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
As the wife of a Naval officer, she and her family lived in Norfolk, VA, Pensacola, FL,Columbus, OH, Point Mugu, CA, and moved to the Tower Hill area of Chalfont in the Fall of 1970. In 1971 she and two neighbor ladies founded the weekly Wednesday Morning Women's Coffee group which continues to this day. Barbara enjoyed traveling abroad and was an avid reader and Bridge player. Her greatest joy was being with and caring for her family. She especially loved playing games with her grandchildren.
Her family were all members of the Lenape Valley Presbyterian Church where she was ordained both as a Deacon and as one of the earliest elected female Elders (1977). She served as both member and Chair of Christian Education, taught in Sunday School, helped organize many of the Vacation Bible Schools, served on both the Activities committee and the Nursery, and many other church social and fellowship functions. She also delivered Meals-on-Wheels in New Britain Township and worked at the NewBritain Baptist Church Larder for a number of years.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate her Memorial Service, 12PM, Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Lenape Valley Presbyterian Church, 321 W. Butler Ave, New Britain, PA where the greeting will begin at 11 AM. A light luncheon will follow service. Interment will be held privately in Whitemarsh Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Activities Fund at Lenape Valley Presbyterian Church at the above address.
